Accessibility Statement
Updated: October 7, 2026
In brief
- We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA and comply with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
- This website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 AA, with known limitations described below.
- We use semantic HTML5, ARIA attributes, keyboard navigation, and high-contrast design.
- If you encounter an accessibility barrier, please email us at hello@flatoutserver.com.
- We will respond to accessibility feedback within five (5) business days.
1. Our Commitment
Flatoutserver is committed to making its website accessible to all users, regardless of ability or the assistive technology they use. We believe that everyone has the right to access journalistic content and information freely and without barrier.
Our accessibility efforts are guided by two key standards:
- Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA - the internationally recognised standard for web accessibility, developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Level AA addresses the most significant barriers for people with disabilities and is widely adopted as the legal standard in Canada and internationally.
- Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), 2005 - Ontario legislation that requires organisations to meet accessibility standards in customer service, employment, information and communications, transportation, and the built environment. Under the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (IASR), O. Reg. 191/11, organisations are required to make web content accessible in accordance with WCAG 2.0 Level AA as a minimum, with our voluntary target of WCAG 2.2 AA.
Accessibility is an ongoing effort, not a one-time task. We are committed to continuously reviewing and improving the accessibility of this website.
2. Measures Taken
Flatoutserver has taken the following measures to ensure the accessibility of this website:
- Skip link: A "Skip to main content" link appears as the first focusable element on every page, allowing keyboard and assistive technology users to bypass repetitive navigation.
- ARIA roles and attributes: Landmark roles (
banner, navigation, main, contentinfo) andaria-label,aria-current,aria-expanded,aria-controls, andaria-hiddenattributes are used throughout to communicate structure and state to assistive technologies. - Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements (links, buttons, form controls, toggles) are reachable and operable using a keyboard alone. Focus styles are visible and clearly distinguishable.
- Colour contrast: Text and UI elements are designed to meet or exceed the WCAG 2.2 AA minimum contrast ratios (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text and UI components).
- Responsive design: Content reflows at all standard viewport sizes, from small mobile screens to large desktop displays, without requiring horizontal scrolling at 400% zoom.
- Reduced motion: The CSS
prefers-reduced-motionmedia query is respected. Animations and transitions are minimised or disabled for users who have configured their operating system to prefer reduced motion. - Alternative text: Meaningful images include descriptive
altattributes. Decorative images use emptyalt=""to be ignored by screen readers. - Semantic HTML: The site uses proper heading hierarchy, lists, tables with appropriate headers, labelled form controls, and meaningful link text throughout.
3. Conformance Status
This website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA. "Partially conformant" means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard.
We are actively working to address known gaps and improve overall conformance. The known limitations are described in Article 5 below.
This statement was last reviewed on October 7, 2026. Accessibility reviews are conducted on a rolling basis as part of the site's ongoing maintenance.
4. Technologies Used
The accessibility of this website relies on the following technologies:
- HTML5 - semantic markup providing structure and meaning
- CSS3 - visual presentation, responsive layout, and reduced-motion support
- Vanilla JavaScript (no framework) - progressive enhancement only; all core content is accessible without JavaScript
- Native system fonts - no custom font loading; system fonts ensure reliable rendering across all devices and operating systems without layout shift
Flatoutserver does not use Flash, Java applets, or other deprecated technologies. All multimedia content is provided in HTML5-native formats (MP4 for video, MP3 for audio) with appropriate caption and transcript support where applicable.
5. Known Limitations
Despite our best efforts, we are aware of the following known limitations:
- AI-generated placeholder images: Some images on this website are AI-generated illustrations used as visual placeholders. Although
altattributes are provided for these images, the descriptions may not fully capture all visual details for users relying on screen readers. We are reviewing our image captioning practices and will improve descriptions over time.
We are not aware of any other systematic barriers at this time, but we acknowledge that our review may not have identified every instance of non-conformance. We encourage users to contact us if they encounter any accessibility issues not described here.
6. Feedback
We welcome feedback on the accessibility of this website. If you encounter any barriers or have suggestions for improvement, please contact us:
